Transparency is only a problem if you want the wooden part of the sign showing.  If you did want the wood you could probably take a picture of the sign and write over it in MS paint or similar (probably don't need to overcome passwords for that.)

The closest concept in english would be 'rustic'
They might have an old thing, one example is a favourite bowl or dish, it's broken, pieces are missing, why fix it?  With gold and pieces from other dishes?
