Preset problem
« on: June 15, 2017, 02:12:20 am »
I tried looking through tutorials and didn't find anything on this issue. How do I color without coloring over the uv layer? I've never had to use layers and all that fancy stuff before lol. Also speaking of gimp, why does the brush lag (brush is a bit behind the cursor) while I'm doing this but not with map files? I'm trying the whole color-over-existing-preset thing, which I've seen tons of people do, and none of them appear to have these problems.

Make the UV invisible [You'll see an eye icon on the layer - just unclick it] and then click on the layer you want to color on.
If you're lagging it might be too many windows open. Or try using another art program.

Edit: I always put the UV on the top
then put the shading layer below that and make the mode "Multiply" [click the layer and above "Opacity" it'll say "Mode: Normal" click the drop down and click "Multiply"]
After that I make a "Color here" layer [name it whatever you want] and put that below the shade layer.

Thanks. Would Sketchbook Pro 6 or Corel Painter X3 work? I heard Paint doesn't work for some reason. The lag thing is just weird since it didn't lag when I opened a heightmap file.

I don't know I've never heard or tried those before but there is no harm in trying!
I always suggest GIMP or Photoshop. :P

I think what you might be looking for, in order to get started, is a layer tutorial if you are unfamiliar with layers. I'm guessing by your post that you use Gimp so I located something for ya:
http://www.wikihow.com/Add-Layers-in-GIMP

You will need to create a new layer for the UV that is separate from your base layer that you will be coloring on. To get the UV onto a different layer, make sure that the transparent layer that you want the UV on is selected/highlighted and then drag and drop the UV image file from the FeralHeart\my_presets\reference folder onto the Gimp image area to place it into that layer.

Switch out the canine uv with the feline uv
Also I would suggest putting the uv at the top
and then adding another layer naming it whatever you want for the coloring of it
[Just to make things much more organized and easier.]

I took a closer look and you did do that. Whoops my bad lmfao.

great so for "Layer" [I would change that to Color or something so it's not confused with any new layers you might add]
and just color!
don't forget the second layer "preset_2head.jpg" should be on "Multiply"!

Thank you guys! It appears to be working now! ^^

https://ibb.co/mFSJV5

Trying this to fix the gimp brush lag since I don't have photoshop or any other gimp-like programs (and gimp has worked fine for everything else):

http://web.archive.org/web/20150316223444/http://gimpforums.com/thread-fixing-cursor-lag-in-gimp-2-8-14-windows

Honestly if that doesn't work I can probably deal with it, I'll just have to take my time.
