Loading in a Heightmap Causes Crashing
« on: August 19, 2017, 08:01:59 am »
Recently I've been wanting to make my own maps for fun, and of course to do that I need to make a heightmap so the land will be more interesting. However, every time I load one into FH the game crashes. I've made sure the image is .png, grayscale (Yes, grayscale MODE not RGB mode colored in grayscale), only one layer, and 513 x 513. Saved in the terrains folder and typed in correctly. Constant crashing. Anyone know how to help?

I'm unsure why yours is not working but a heightmap should be:
Opaque (No transparency or alpha channel.)
Locked at 513x513 (So that the size can't be changed.)
Grayscale
Only 1 Layer (Make sure to Flatten the image.)

You can try using & modifying (copy and paste your heightmap into it) this:

It's just a flat, standard heightmap for getting started... it has everything set up already.
You'll have to put it somewhere fh can find it though.
Also: You can change the .jpg to .png by using "file > save as" if you want to keep using .png, which makes the map smoother. =)
For the sake of my own health and interests, I've left FH and I won't be looking back.

I downloaded the blank heightmap and it worked flawlessly on FH. However, when I open the file in my program and draw in a little design and save that to see if it works, it just doesn't. Does program matter?

As far as I know it does not matter what program you use, but they do work differently.
The file I gave you a link to was made using GIMP.

Oh, yeah. Whenever I make heightmaps, I use Gimp, so I would suggest trying to stick with that program for heightmaps, or masks. :) In my opinion, it's the easiest to use for that sort of stuff. I'm glad you got it all figured out though. Sometimes, it's so annoying when I would create a heightmap & forget that I had it in RGB mode but I would still have it colored gray, but it would crash my Feral-Heart & I would be so confused, haha. Make sure you always set it up properly before you start, to avoid mini tantrums like I went through, haha. I hope you have fun creating your maps!

I'm glad to hear that you got it working. I'll lock up your thread since the problem was fixed. c:
