Backgrounds Missing On Text Boxes

hi!
my feralheart game seems to be having an issue displaying the background on text boxes. pictures below for example



...and i think you get the idea.
i have not tampered with the files lately at all, and this happened yesterday while i was playing the game. it crashed, and when i re-opened it, the backgrounds were missing.
i've obviously tried exiting and opening the game repeatedly, but nothing has changed. is there any way i can get the backgrounds back?

Start the game, go into the options menu, click the Video tab, and then change the rendering subsystem to Direct3D9 and restart the game.
