Crashing at random times during exporting object-heavy map
« on: February 08, 2018, 03:54:07 pm »
The Map Maker keeps crashing when I try to export my object-heavy map, I've tried exporting it 5-10 times and exporting still crashes.

The exporting reaches a different progress level before each crash, although it never seems to fully export. It will export for a minute sometimes, other times the export will run for only 30 seconds, and there's no pattern to it at all.

The Music Cube object is missing, that's how I know it didn't fully export, but I don't know how many objects didn't get the chance to export.

How do I stop the crashing?
Is my PC unable to handle exporting the map? Or is FH incapable of exporting a map with so many objects?

I'm attempting to export an update to a map that started with a lot of detail, and the first version of this map exported successfully the second time, but the new version keeps crashing at random times during exporting and never successfully exported.

My presets.

Good things take time, so I'll take an eternity and create something so good that the human brain can't handle the sheer goodness of it.

Hmm, that is odd, I never had that problem with exporting maps I had made. Tell me a bit more about your map and your computer in general so I can see if I can figure out which it is, the map or the computer. Answer these questions for me.

-How many GB of RAM does your system have.

-Have you had this issue with other maps in the past.

-Is there any objects in the map with scrolling or cycling animation.

-Does FeralHeart crash for any other reasons on you recently.

-Are the objects custom mesh or downloaded from somewhere made by another person.

-Any other details on the situation.

If I can't help you I am sure someone else can, but I can try!

1: 16 GB.

2: I've had a map crash during exporting once before, but this is the first time I've had a map never successfully export.

3: The test tubes, the life monitors, the heart monitor machine and the oscilloscope face have scrolling textures on them. The life monitor has a cycling animation on it.

4: Months ago(But I can't pinpoint the exact day it started), FH suddenly stopped letting me travel from The Grounds to Cherika Valley(Through Ficho) without an instant crash at Cherika Valley, it also stopped letting me go from Cherika Valley to The Grounds without an instant crash at The Grounds.

5: Most of the objects are not made by me, the rest are objects I've made.

6: I load Map Maker, I load the map, I click Export. After 30-60 seconds, it stops responding, but I see a few files being made in the Exports folder(I've also exported without the Exports folder open, many times too), then it's guaranteed to crash around a minute after it stops responding.

I'll try to reverse one of the changes I made that is adding another scrolling test tube, removing the test tube I added.

Hmm well your computer with that many GB of RAM seems like it would be more than well equipped to handle big maps, I myself have that same amount of RAM. So I guess we can rule out your computer being the problem. When you could not export your map in the past successfully what was it that fixed it, did you just try again or did you make a few changes? Also fair to note that you should check for any corrupted files possible. I know I always am one to jump to uninstalling stuff when having issues, so I have been trying to rule out other possible fixes lately for people XD But I would say check your files and do a quick look through of everything and make sure your files seem to be okay. One theory I have about your issues is if you saved it previously and the file got corrupted somehow.

My computer is from 2014, and it's gained a knack of randomly freezing completely(It usually freezes once each day).
When you could not export your map in the past successfully what was it that fixed it, did you just try again or did you make a few changes?
Just trying again fixed it in the past.
But I would say check your files and do a quick look through of everything and make sure your files seem to be okay.
How do I know which files aren't okay?

The thing with how to check which files are corrupt I am not 100% sure about and I don't want to give you the wrong instructions, so sorry for that :( But typically this is what admins tell me to look for if I ask for help involving files, hopefully one of the admins may come here and let you know how to do that. I don't want to tell you the wrong thing to do, but typically it has to do with removing certain files from the folders where you save your content and the folders where you export maps, sorry I can't answer that question.

I removed all files from my Exports folder before attempting to export the map, making it easier for me to put the map's files in a .zip file

The number and density of objects may not have anything to do with this, actually. It's the particles that kill computers; do you have any particles in your map? If so, it may be worth looking into removing some. Also, after exporting, the particles may duplicate inside of your "particles" folder. You'll know if they do this because there will be new files ending in _0, _1, etc. Delete these

Another tip while exporting: no matter what you do, do not click the screen until it has finished!
Farewell everyone<3

Have you tried lowering the resolution of your FeralHeart window to something much smaller to export the game? And possibly changing rendering subsystems for the export?

The only particles in the map are the bubble particles that are stuck to the test tubes, and those haven't duplicated I think, I don't see bubble particles in the Particles folder.
And tabbing out did cause more crashing, so I stopped tabbing out while exporting, but I'll stop touching the mouse while exporting to see if it works.

The resolution window was as low as it can be while exporting.
I'll try changing the rendering subsystem while exporting.

EDIT: I tried those two solutions now, and they worked! The map's successfully exported! ;D
Thank you to everyone who posted here, I can upload the map now that it exports :)
