You could go to jail for steaming...
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:46:07 am »
This more or less applies to US citizens, but it's still a rather idiotic move on any lawmakers' parts.

http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/ten_strikes/

This "law" is currently being considered.

Basically: if you're caught streaming copyrighted material, (like music in the background of your YouTube videos), more than ten times - you go to jail.

What do you guys think about this? So many people do stuff like this, and if it does pass - where would the internet be?

I am all for this. Have you ever read the fine print on cds, and movies? In a nutshell it says not to copy, distribute, or present publicly. So streaming is already illegal, but now they are cracking down on it. It likely will not pass anyway, it would take years to filter through everything that is already up AND moderate what is posted.

But what if it is just someone doing a blog thing and a family member is listening to their music in the background? They're basically saying if the music is in your video or whatever more than 10 times then you can be sent to jail. That's ridiculous!

And people doing karaoke, they could get jailed too... It's overboard. Yes, there needs to be a little more done about stealing music, but going overboard is a no.

Do you realize how many young kids do karaoke, some even younger than me? This is a stupid law, I agree. People on Youtube, Vimeo, etc. do that kind of stuff all the time so that would be like sending over half the U.S. to jail, as my mom said. They wouldn't have enough room. They even said it was worse that child molesting. There are bigger and more sever issues that they need to worry about right now.

As brief as my source is, I can't say for certain it's entirely inaccurate. Brevity can make everything seem inaccurate when piled up against thicker sources, actually.

Still, it's not fair to say the law would be 100% helpful, nor is it 100% wrong. I am able to see where the companies come from, but I'm more afraid of the overkill that most likely will come in the future if it is passed.

In my opinion this is sort of...stupid.

All in all I think it would fail. It would take an INSANELY large amount of people to oppose it though, but I think it would.

I don't see why they should crack down so hard on this. Kids, teens, adults, a wide variety of ages, mindsets, and stages of growth and understanding do this. XD

Besides...
Who has perfect eyesight these days to read the fine print on the back of a CD anyway? Who even bothers to go out and buy CDs anymore, eh?
