Map Making Help!
« on: March 16, 2013, 01:27:39 pm »
Okay so Im trying to make my first map ever based of Lion King.
But first Im testing trying to figure out how things work. Now Im trying to make hills and water and stuff but when ever I make a map and I enter the name of it in the "Terrain Hight Map" Box the game crashes. But when I type it in the "Terrain Alpha Map" It works, but okay I made a map with 3 islands and a river in one island. The islands are grey and the river and ocean around that is black. Now what? How do I make a black stripe and black around the islands to water? Argh so many questions.
Also when ever I try to make water in a diffrent way like that "New Water" Button it is either extremly shallow and like vanishes when you walk on it.
Or (I saw in a post that you should type in waterTex1 or 2 in the "Water Materials" box) when I type in water material like waterTex1 or 2 and click its just a white square.
Lol this is so annoying, I just want a river and a lake and some hills, why is it so complicated?!
Help please!

I can't answer the part about the greyscale part of making the map since I'm not too experienced in that area yet but you can check out this tutorial since there's a small section explaining it:
http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=2&jfile=index.php&topic=17452.0%20newwindow

When it comes to the crashing everytime you try to load your height map you should check this out:
http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=2&jfile=index.php&topic=1391.0

As for the water being shallow there should be a number next to the adding water part of the map maker and if you increase that number the water will rise. Since I'm on mobile I can't really give you a screenshot but I hope you understand.

Here are some more helpful tutorials made by Red:

(you can get tips for the greyscale map here)

(this will help with the mask making part)

Are you absolutely certain your terrain map is in Grayscale mode (and saved as a png)? Most image files are automatically in RGB mode! I'm not too sure about how to change the mode in GIMP, but in Photoshop it's simply a case of going into Image -> Mode -> Grayscale! If it's in any other mode, it'll crash FH!

You should be able to adjust the nasty blacks once you've got both the Alpha Map and Terrain Map working! The alpha map is for all the colours, wheras the terrain gives you all the shiny hills and such you desire.

And oof-- that sometimes happens! As far as I'm aware, you don't need to type in any texture (unless you want something other than the defeault). It works perfectly fine if I leave box blank and just select 'New Water'! Then it's just a case of selecting it, popping into controls and moving it around. If you've not left an indent for water on your terrain map, it might be very shallow! :D

Nemena Im using paint because, thanks to my dad -_-, I cant install things on my computer so I have no clue how to see if the picture is grayscale or not.
LordSuragaha I will check out those links, thanks. I will reply if it helped.

Hmm you're definitely going to need a better art program to work with than paint. GIMP or photoshop are the best. You should just talk to your dad about it. I use GIMP and it's safe to download so long as you get it from the official site:
http://www.gimp.org/
I don't think you can get greyscale on paint and if your terrain is not in greyscale that's definitely a reason why it would crash...

Okay I managed to make a like testing map, but when I move on to making a backround using gimp. Like it sais here: http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=2&jfile=index.php&topic=17452.0%20newwindow
Im like uhhhh how? I did the terrian and hegiths/grayscale but textures is proving a bit trickier. And cant you make the map bigger? Or no matter what size the map itself is it will adjust to the size of the hole ground.
