What Is 'Spamming the Chat' Considered to YOU?

Everyone has their own definitions of what 'spam' is, so it's no surprise that someone believed you to be spamming, while most of us probably wouldn't say that you were as long as you weren't repetitively posting.

To me, spamming is just when people clutter the chat with absolute nonsense. People overdoing their movie clips (only repost occasionally people), people CapsLocking a bunch of short-word responses. Short word responses aren't the problem, it's when you feel the need to send a bunch of them within the same 10 seconds. *groans* It's an overall attempt to capture everyone's attention in a really desperate and irritating manner.

In regards to what you said, I don't think you're a problem. You're keeping the mindset "I gotta limit how much I advertise, I don't wanna spam" It sounds like you actually know what spam is.

spamming is when i can't even read a single darned message while having a conversation because of one or more people. another reason i changed my view completely, went from grammar and capitalization to non like a person would cut his/her hair to signify a change, and stop using local completely. it just wasn't working for me, and i no longer had a problem with anyone. sure, i can't meet new people any longer, but if someone really wants to chat with me it's literally in my bio that i have local off and only chat via whisper or party.

Sorry that this happened to you, it's a shame when some people have to pick on others for no good reason. I'm not sure how accurate to the textbook I am on my definition, but I believe that spamming is a repeated phrase, word, movie etc. that is either a)unnecessary or unimportant or b)excessively rude and purposely malicious. Putting out a couple of movie clips in a row or maybe an ad or two every few minutes is neither unnecessary or purposely meant to be rude and disruptive, so in my books you're in the okay. Don't worry too much though, it's most likely that those people were either trying to pick fun out of you or were ignorant on the topic themselves and were wrongfully accusing you.

I think basically everyone else has said it really, constant repetition of a letter, word or sentence. Especially if it is purposefully done for attention or to harass.

It is also incredibly, stupidly annoying.

To me, spam is flooding the public chats with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. I'm sorry to hear what happened to you. I would recommend blocking them, making you unable to see eachother.

To me it's flooding the chat with the same thing, or abusing the roar/howl action.
One time, this person said "STOP HOWLING OR I WILL TELL FH TO GET RID OF HOWLING" I replied by saying "They might not listen. KovuTLK abandoned the game, so there might not be anymore updates." (But there was) Because her character was a feline, she then said "FINE I WILL ROAR ALL NIGHT" and I said "That will not help, it's just going to make it worse." She could've just turned off the sound effects. -_-

In agreement with those above, I classify spamming as the excessive repeatin' of an irrelevant message, or anythin' else that could flood the chat in no one's interests whatsoever.

Wow. That is sad for that person to say that to you. You were completely fine with your advertisement. Just because they don't like it doesn't mean they have to make a fuss about it to you in Whisper. And if they are so bothered, they can leave to another map OR block. But what you done was not spamming. That person is just out there to get at others it seems so I would just block them the next time they whisper. Spamming is like what the others said: repeating one action over again each second. It's not what that person called you out for. You were completely fine.

To me, spamming is pushing out ten of the exact same thing in a row, or it being every other line of the chat. What ISN'T spamming, is having three on a screen. I try to keep at least two of my movies on screen at a time with a slightly extended upwards chat, and that sometimes means that there may be three on screen at a time. If I see one movie is going to go off soon, I post another.

A technique I used to use to avoid spamming was to count to ten before posting another. As movies slowly began to die off, I pushed it up to fifteen/twenty.
